What’s the experience like?

We rumbled through the Yala gates just after 4:30 am — still dark enough that the air felt thick and quiet. Our driver, Janaka, grinned when I fumbled with the binoculars (he said everyone does at first). The jeep windows were open and the smell of wet earth drifted in. It’s weird how awake you feel out here before sunrise, listening for peacock calls or just the crunch of tires over gravel. I kept thinking: this is nothing like watching nature shows at home.

Janaka slowed down near a bend where he’d heard leopards sometimes cross at dawn. We waited, barely whispering. Someone pointed out a fresh paw print in the mud — not huge but definitely there — and my heart sped up for no reason I could explain. We didn’t see a leopard right then, but later, after some fruit and strong tea (breakfast comes with the tour), we caught a flash of spots moving between trees. It was quick. Janaka spotted it first; he always does. He laughed when I tried to pronounce “kotiya” (leopard in Sinhala) — probably butchered it.

I didn’t expect to see elephants so close either, or hear sloth bears snuffling somewhere off in the brush. There were bright blue kingfishers darting over water and monkeys squabbling on branches overhead — honestly, half the fun was just watching Janaka point things out like he’d grown up knowing every inch of this place. By about 11:30 am we were back at the gate, dusty but kind of wired from everything we’d seen. Still think about that leopard sometimes.
