What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is Noi, our guide, laughing when my flip-flop got stuck in the sand as we boarded the boat from Koh Samui — she just grinned and said “island style!” and handed me a slice of pineapple. The air was thick with salt and sunscreen, and honestly, I didn’t expect how quickly the city noise would fade into nothing but waves and the low hum of Thai pop from someone’s phone. It felt like we’d left regular life behind before we even left the pier.

We drifted for what felt like hours (maybe it was less — time gets weird out there) through these wild limestone islands that just rise up out of nowhere. At one point, Noi pointed out a sea eagle circling above us, wings catching the morning sun. There’s this moment when you pull up to the Emerald Lake — or Green Lagoon, depending who you ask — and it’s just silent except for everyone’s sandals slapping on the wooden steps. The water is so green it almost looks fake. I tried to say its Thai name (Talay Nai) but definitely butchered it; Noi laughed again. That echo sticks with me.

Lunch was simple but good — rice, veggies, some spicy curry that made my nose run (in a good way), plus fruit and cold water. There were vegan options too; one guy at our table seemed relieved about that. After eating we stopped at another deserted beach where the sand felt almost squeaky underfoot, and I remember lying back listening to nothing but cicadas and distant splashing. No rush to do anything except maybe swim or just stare at those weird rock shapes jutting out everywhere.

I still think about that view from the top of the steps above Emerald Lake — sweat running down my back, legs shaky from the climb, but worth every step. You can see all these tiny islands scattered across blue water like someone dropped them by accident. The ride back was quieter; everyone seemed kind of sun-dazed or lost in their own thoughts. Funny how quickly strangers feel familiar after a day like that.
