What’s the experience like?

“Don’t rush—let the water show you what’s here,” our guide Somchai said as we stepped off the boat at Nang Yuan Island. He grinned, already barefoot on the sand before I’d even found my balance. The sun was still soft, not too hot yet, and there was this salty-breeze smell mixed with sunscreen and something sweet from someone’s fruit bag nearby. We were only 12 people in our group—felt more like a bunch of friends than a tour.

I tried to pronounce Nang Yuan properly (Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin—probably butchered it), then we wandered up the wooden steps to that famous viewpoint. It’s steeper than it looks in photos. My shirt stuck to my back by the time we reached the top, but wow—the three islands connected by those thin strips of white sand? I just stood there for a minute, not even taking pictures at first. You could hear kids laughing below and those tiny waves slapping the shore.

We got plenty of time for snorkeling—first around Nang Yuan, then later after lunch at Koh Tao. Somchai pointed out parrotfish and these electric blue clams I’d never seen before. The water really is clear; you can see your own shadow on the sand below. Lunch was this simple Thai spread (I went for veggie curry), eaten under a palm roof while watching boats bobbing nearby. Someone passed around pineapple slices that tasted almost fizzy from the sun.

The ride back to Koh Samui felt quieter—maybe everyone was tired or just full of salt and sun. I kept replaying that view from above in my head (still do sometimes). It’s funny how fast you forget emails and city noise when you’re floating face-down over coral with strangers who start to feel like friends.
