What’s the experience like?

I thought I’d seen enough “tropical paradise” photos to be immune, but the first jump off our speedboat near Ko Phi Phi Le got me anyway. The water was so clear it almost looked fake — until I tasted the salt and heard Lek (our guide) laughing at my clumsy mask adjustment. He handed me a slice of pineapple before we even finished drying off. There’s something about eating fruit with wet hands that just feels right here.

We drifted past Viking Cave — Lek told us about the swiftlet nests inside, his voice half-lost in the engine hum and wind. Then Monkey Beach, where the monkeys actually ignored us (maybe they’re unionized now?). Lunch was a Thai buffet set up right on the sand; I tried to pronounce “pad krapow” properly and Lek winced. The private speedboat tour meant we could linger as long as we wanted, which honestly felt like cheating compared to those packed group boats buzzing by.

By late afternoon, we reached Tup Island and Poda Island — both quieter than I expected. The sand was powdery underfoot, and there was this faint scent of grilled fish from somewhere down the shore. We snorkeled again, spotting parrotfish so bright they looked painted on. My mask kept fogging up but I didn’t care much; sometimes you just want to float and listen to your own breathing for a while.

The last stop was Phra Nang Beach in Railay Bay for sunset. The cliffs glowed orange and pink, and someone nearby played guitar softly (I think it was one of the boat crew). They handed out club sandwiches — not what I pictured eating in Thailand, but somehow perfect after a salty day. I still think about that light on the limestone walls. If you’re asking if it’s worth doing a private day trip from Krabi to Phi Phi & 4 Islands… well, yeah. It’s not something you shake off quickly.
