What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how quiet the stables felt, except for the horses’ soft snuffling and that leathery smell you only get around saddles. Our guide — I think his name was Mehmet — handed me the reins and grinned, probably guessing I’d never sat on a horse before. He said not to worry, these horses know the way better than we do. I believed him after mine nudged my elbow like he wanted to get going already.

We set off from the edge of Lara Beach, just as a salty breeze picked up. It wasn’t crowded at all — just us, Mehmet, and a few other riders weaving between tall pines. The sand felt softer than I expected under the horse’s hooves, almost springy. Mehmet kept chatting about growing up in Antalya, pointing out wild herbs (he made me smell one — sharp and lemony) and telling stories about old fishermen who used to camp here before all the hotels showed up.

I didn’t expect how peaceful it would feel to ride so close to the water. There was this moment where we stopped for photos by the sea — honestly, I’m not usually into posing but somehow it felt right with that blue stretching forever behind us. Someone joked about going for a swim with our boots on; nobody did but we all laughed anyway. Even if you’ve never done a day trip horseback riding in Antalya before (like me), it’s easy — the horses just follow each other, no drama.

After an hour or so we looped back toward the stables, still smelling that mix of pine needles and salt air. My legs were wobbly getting down (nobody warns you about that part), but Mehmet gave me a thumbs-up like I’d passed some secret test. I still think about that stretch of empty beach sometimes when things get noisy back home.
