What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was the salty breeze—cooler than I expected for late spring in Istanbul. We met our guide right by the pier, just past a simit vendor whose cart smelled like toasted sesame. The boat wasn’t crowded, which meant we could move around and snap photos without bumping elbows. As soon as we pulled away from the dock, the city’s skyline started to shift—minarets on one side, leafy neighborhoods on the other.

Our guide, Emre, pointed out old wooden mansions tucked between modern apartments along the water’s edge. He shared stories about sultans who once sailed these same waters and explained why some palaces look almost faded in the morning light. I noticed fishermen casting lines off tiny jetties, and every so often, you’d hear a ferry horn echo across the strait. The bridges overhead looked massive from below—especially when a cargo ship passed under with barely any clearance.
