What’s the experience like?

I didn’t actually expect the air in Cappadocia to feel that cold before dawn. There was this sleepy hush as we waited for the hot air balloon to fill — just the soft whoosh of burners and a few nervous giggles from our little group. When we finally lifted off, I could smell the faintest trace of smoke and dust. Our guide, Emre, pointed out fairy chimneys below (he called them “peri bacaları” — I tried to say it back and got a laugh). Floating above Love Valley as the sun cracked over the horizon… I still think about that view sometimes when I close my eyes.

After breakfast (the bread was warm and honestly better than I expected), we wandered through Göreme Open-Air Museum. The frescoes inside those cave churches are faded but you can still make out saints’ faces if you squint. Later in Avanos, I tried making pottery — mine looked like a lopsided cup but the old man running the wheel just grinned and gave me a thumbs up anyway. The day trip from Istanbul to Cappadocia felt packed but not rushed; there was always time for tea or a joke with someone local.

Pamukkale was brighter than any photo — almost blinding white under midday sun. We walked barefoot across the travertine terraces (the water’s warm but the stone is weirdly soft) and dipped our feet in Cleopatra’s Pool. Our guide told us stories about Hierapolis while kids splashed nearby. Lunches were simple but filling — lentil soup, grilled chicken, lots of bread. Ephesus was last: wandering past the Library of Celsus with its broken columns, then standing in that huge theater where apparently St Paul once spoke. It’s strange how quiet it feels now compared to what it must’ve been like centuries ago.

The whole thing ran smoother than I thought for such a long route — flights between each region, pickups right from our hotels in Istanbul and Kusadasi, even veggie options at lunch when I asked (my friend went for seconds on baklava). It wasn’t perfect — there were some early mornings and my shoes got soaked at Pamukkale — but honestly? That’s half the fun.
