Summary

Walk Ephesus ruins from Istanbul see House of Virgin Mary & Artemis temple

You’ll walk ancient streets at Ephesus, hear stories from a local guide, and visit the peaceful House of Virgin Mary—all with flights and hotel pickup handled for you. Taste fresh Turkish lunch and watch artisans weave rugs by hand. It’s a full day that leaves you thinking about history long after you’re back in your hotel room.

experience

What’s the experience like?

There was this soft shuffle of feet on marble as we first stepped into Ephesus—honestly, that’s what I remember before anything else. The place felt almost too big for the morning light. Our guide, Cem, had this habit of pausing mid-sentence to let us just look at things—like the Celsus Library columns catching a bit of sun or the way the old stone smelled after last night’s rain. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing in that Grand Theatre, but there it was—echoes bouncing off empty seats while someone in our group tried out their opera voice (not bad, actually).

The day started early with a pickup in Istanbul—I barely remember the ride to the airport except for my coffee being way too strong. Flying to Izmir took about an hour, then we met up with others for the drive to Ephesus. Cem told us stories about Artemis on the way—the goddess and her temple, or what’s left of it anyway. It’s mostly foundations now but somehow you can picture how huge it must’ve been. He pointed out wildflowers growing where pillars used to stand. I kind of zoned out thinking about how many people have walked here before us.

After wandering through ruins and statues (the Nike one is smaller than I thought), we drove up a hill to visit the House of Virgin Mary. There was incense in the air and people tying wishes on ribbons outside—a quiet sort of place, even with visitors around. Lunch was simple but good—grilled chicken, bread still warm—and then we stopped by a workshop where women were weaving rugs by hand. One of them laughed when I tried saying “teşekkürler” (I definitely butchered it). That moment stuck with me more than I expected.

By evening we were back at Izmir airport for our flight home. There’s something about seeing so much history in one day that leaves you both tired and kind of restless—I kept replaying bits in my head during the drive back to my hotel in Istanbul. Not sure if it was just the long day or that feeling you get when you know you’ve stood somewhere important.
