What’s the experience like?

We’d already left Sarigerme behind when I realized how salty the air tasted — it’s different out here near Göcek. The boat was bigger than I expected, double decks and all, but somehow still felt relaxed. Our guide (I think his name was Cem? He had this easy smile) pointed out the first stop: Buyukova Bay. People were already halfway in the water before I’d even found my sunscreen. There’s something about swimming off a boat that makes you feel like a kid again — the water’s so clear you can see your toes wiggling.

I tried snorkeling for maybe five minutes before getting distracted by the sound of someone flipping pancakes on “Pancake Island.” It’s not really an island covered in pancakes — more like a little floating kitchen where a woman named Ayşe makes these thin gözleme with cheese and herbs. Li laughed when I tried to say thank you in Turkish — probably butchered it but Ayşe just smiled and handed me another one anyway. We spent about 45 minutes at each bay; enough time to swim or just lie back on the deck letting the sun dry your skin.

The stop at Bedri Rahmi Bay surprised me — there’s this rock painting right above the water, faded but still there after decades. Cem told us a bit about the artist (a poet too, apparently) while we floated nearby. The breeze picked up around Aquarium Bay and I remember thinking how quiet it got for a second, just waves slapping against the hull and someone humming softly somewhere behind me. I still think about that view sometimes — blue everywhere and nothing urgent to do.
