What’s the experience like?

The city feels different once the sun dips behind the skyline. We started our walk near Galata Bridge—right where fishermen line up with their rods and the air smells faintly of grilled mackerel from the boats below. Our guide, Cem, pointed out how the lights from Karaköy shimmer on the water. It’s busy but not overwhelming; you can actually hear snippets of Turkish chatter and the soft hum of ferries crossing the Golden Horn.

We wandered through narrow streets toward Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque. I’d never noticed before how the marble stays cool under your hand, even after a warm day. Cem shared stories about Sinan, the architect—apparently he designed this mosque for an admiral who wanted to pray before heading to sea. The call to prayer echoed softly as we stepped outside; it felt almost private at this hour.

If you’re lucky and your guide’s route allows, you might swing by Galata Tower or even Viaport Marina. We didn’t make it to both, but honestly, just seeing locals spill out of tiny cafés around the tower was enough. The pace slows down at night—shopkeepers chat on doorsteps and there’s always someone offering tea. Cem gave us tips on where to grab dessert after, away from tourist crowds (we ended up with pistachio baklava at a spot he swore by).
