What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect the Dardanelles to smell so clean—almost sharp, like sea salt and cold metal. We’d left Istanbul before sunrise (I was barely awake when the van pulled up), but by the time we reached Eceabat, my stomach was rumbling and the air felt different. Our guide, Emre, seemed to know every backstory—he joked about how many times he’s crossed between Europe and Asia in a single day. Lunch was simple but filling; I still remember the bread was warm enough to steam up my glasses.

The ferry crossing itself felt oddly significant. Maybe it’s just me being dramatic, but standing outside as the wind whipped around us—knowing we were literally between continents—it made the whole “day trip Machu Picchu Cusco” type of thing feel small by comparison. There were locals chatting in Turkish, a kid feeding bread to gulls, and Emre pointing out where ancient armies would have camped along the shore. He had this way of making history sound like gossip you weren’t supposed to overhear.

Walking through Troy’s ruins was nothing like I’d pictured from old textbooks. The stones are worn smooth in places; you can see where people must’ve sat or leaned hundreds of years ago. There’s a replica Trojan Horse—kind of kitschy but fun for photos—and at one point Emre laughed when I tried to pronounce “Bouleuterion.” (I definitely butchered it.) The sun came out for a bit while we stood near what used to be the Temple of Athena, and honestly, I just wanted to sit there longer. You could hear birds and distant voices echoing off stone.

On the way back, I kept thinking about those layers of history under our feet—the Iliad stuff is only part of it. We crossed back over the water as dusk started creeping in; everyone got quieter. Maybe it was tiredness or maybe something else—I still think about that view across two continents.
