What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed when we pulled into Abu Dhabi — after that long-ish drive from Dubai in a nicely chilled SUV (thank god for AC) — was how white everything looked. Not just clean, but almost glowing. Our guide, Ahmed, grinned as he handed us bottled water and pointed out the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I’d seen photos before but standing there, the marble felt cold under my palms and I kept craning my neck to count domes — gave up after ten. There’s this hush inside that surprised me; even with a few tour groups around, it felt sort of peaceful. Ahmed showed us where to spot the gold details and told a story about how the carpets were woven by hand. I tried to imagine doing that for months — my back hurt just thinking about it.

Afterwards, we zipped past Etihad Towers (so many glass reflections you could lose track of which building is which) and stopped at the Heritage Village. It’s kind of like stepping into someone’s memory — sand underfoot, old tools on display, a guy weaving baskets who nodded at us but didn’t say much. The air smelled faintly of spices and something sweet — maybe dates? Speaking of which, we wandered through the dates market later and honestly, I never realized there were so many types. Ahmed insisted we try one stuffed with orange peel. Not my favorite combo but hey, when in Abu Dhabi.

Lunch was at Marina Mall (I’m not fancy but the view over the water was pretty great), then we cruised along the Corniche where families picnicked in little patches of shade. The Louvre Abu Dhabi was next — that dome lets in light like raindrops but without any rain (hard to explain unless you see it). Last stop: Ferrari World. I didn’t go on the world’s fastest rollercoaster (chickened out), but watching people launch off with their hair flying everywhere made me laugh. By then I was wiped out and grateful for our driver waiting outside with more cold water.

I keep thinking about that moment in the mosque — sunlight bouncing off white marble, shoes off, everything quiet except for a distant call to prayer drifting through open doors.
