What’s the experience like?

You know that feeling when you’re not sure if you’re dreaming or just jet-lagged? That’s how it started for me — one minute I was staring out the window at Dubai’s glass towers, the next I was bouncing over sand dunes with our driver laughing every time we slid sideways. I gripped the seat tighter than I’d like to admit. The desert outside was this shifting gold, all soft edges and then suddenly sharp heat when we stopped. Our guide (I think his name was Ahmed?) handed out cold water and pointed at a line of camels plodding past — their bells made this gentle clinking sound that stuck in my head.

The Sahara Desert Fortress looked almost unreal against the sky. Inside, there were trays of dates and tiny cups of cardamom coffee — I tried to pour it myself and nearly spilled it everywhere, but one of the women in a bright scarf just smiled and helped me out. There was frankincense burning somewhere nearby; it clung to my clothes for hours after. We wandered around — there was a souq with lanterns throwing colored light on everything, henna artists painting hands (I still have a faded swirl on my wrist), even falcons perched so close you could see every feather twitch.

Dinner was this wild mix: smoky lamb from the BBQ station, salads with herbs I couldn’t name, something sweet with rosewater that tasted like nothing back home. People talked quietly or not at all; everyone seemed sort of hushed by the place or maybe just full from eating too much. Later there were dancers — swirling skirts, drums echoing off stone walls, fire spinning so close you felt the heat on your face. It didn’t feel staged somehow, more like everyone fell into the rhythm together for a while.

I kept thinking about how far we’d come from the city lights — how dark and wide the sky felt out here. When it was time to go back (soft drinks in hand), nobody rushed. Even now if I catch a whiff of frankincense somewhere random, I remember sitting under those lanterns with sand still in my shoes.
