What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered how much you can actually see in a single day outside Dubai? I didn’t think I’d remember all the names—Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain, Fujairah, Khor Fakkan—but now they’re sort of tangled up with little moments. Our guide, Ahmed, had this habit of pointing out things that weren’t even on the schedule—a fisherman waving from his battered boat near Khor Fakkan or a bakery where the smell of cardamom bread drifted out into the street. The van was cool (thankfully), but every time we stepped out it was like walking into a different story—sometimes humid and salty by the sea, sometimes dry and still near old forts.

The Ajman Museum surprised me. It’s inside an old fort, and you can still see bullet holes in some walls if you look closely (Ahmed swore they were real). There was this one room with ancient pearl diving gear—I tried to imagine wearing it underwater. Not sure I could’ve done it. In Sharjah’s Blue Souk I lost track of time haggling over a brass teapot (didn’t buy it; still regret that). The fish market nearby was loud and chaotic—shouts in Arabic and English mixing with the slap of fish on ice. Someone handed me a date to try. Sticky sweet.

Al Badiyah Mosque was quieter than I expected. It’s supposed to be the oldest mosque in the UAE—tiny compared to others but somehow more peaceful. We took off our shoes; the stone floor felt cool even though it was midday. An old man sitting outside nodded at us as we left—I tried to say thank you in Arabic but probably butchered it because he just smiled wider.

Khor Fakkan beach wasn’t crowded at all—just kids chasing each other and that constant sound of water hitting rocks. We didn’t swim (no time), but I stood there for a minute longer than everyone else, just listening. There’s something about seeing so many sides of the UAE in one day that makes you realize how layered this place is—not just skyscrapers and malls. I still think about that view from the van window as we drove back toward Dubai, lights flickering on across all those towns we’d just passed through.
