What’s the experience like?

“You see that alley? That’s where they dumped the getaway car—no kidding,” our guide Tony said, waving his cigar (fake, but he sold it). I’d never been on a tour where the guide slipped so easily into character—half history teacher, half wise guy. The bus rattled past old brick corners while Tony tossed out names like Capone and Moran as if they were neighbors. I could smell the city’s mix of rain and exhaust through the cracked window. It felt like Chicago was letting us in on something secret.

We stopped at the Biograph Theater—yeah, the one where John Dillinger got gunned down. There’s still this hush outside, even with traffic rolling by. Tony pointed to a faded plaque and told us how Dillinger tried to blend in with the crowd after a movie. I found myself squinting at the sidewalk, trying to picture it all—the panic, maybe even the popcorn smell drifting out back then. Someone behind me muttered, “Wild times,” and honestly, it was hard not to agree.

The Holy Name Cathedral was next. I didn’t expect to feel much standing outside a church, but Tony got quiet for a second before telling us about Dean O’Banion—choirboy-turned-gangster who ran a flower shop across the street (Schofield’s). Apparently that shop handled all the mob funerals until O’Banion himself got shot there in 1924. The story felt heavy somehow; people walking by barely glanced up, but for a minute you could almost hear old hymns mixed with sirens in your head. There were raffles and little prizes at the end—nothing fancy but kind of fun after all those dark stories.
