What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel the salt air before we even saw the water — but rolling into Clearwater Beach from Orlando, windows cracked just a bit, there it was: that warm, slightly sweet Gulf smell. Our guide, Mike, had this way of pointing out things you’d miss — like how the sand here is almost powdery under your feet because it’s quartz (he let us guess first; I was way off). The drive wasn’t short but honestly, I dozed off for part of it. Not complaining.

The beach itself is loud in a good way — gulls arguing overhead, kids already sticky with sunscreen running toward the surf. We had plenty of time to just flop down and watch the clouds shuffle by. I wandered over to the marina where all these boat tours line up. Ended up picking the Dolphin Encounter (mostly because someone said “guaranteed dolphins” and I wanted to test that). Captain Lisa steered us out past Clearwater Pass — she told stories about the celebrity houses along the shore and pointed out bottlenose dolphins weaving through our wake. At one point everyone got quiet at once when two dolphins surfaced right next to us — I still think about that little moment of hush.

Lunch was included if you wanted it (I did), so we grabbed seats at a place right on the sand. Fish tacos, cold soda, toes buried in warm grit. Honestly, after all those days in Orlando’s lines and crowds, this felt like hitting pause. Some families went for pirate ships or speedboats — you could see them waving hats or shrieking as they zipped by — but I just liked sitting there watching pelicans try to steal fries from someone’s plate. We left sunburned and sandy and tired in that good way.
