What’s the experience like?

I still remember the way the harness felt—kind of awkward at first, straps digging in as I tried to laugh it off with my friend. We’d just met our captain on the dock behind Marina Cafe in Destin, Florida. He had this sunburned grin and kept joking about “Florida’s version of flying.” The salt air was thick that morning and honestly, I was more nervous than I let on. There’s something about seeing those bright parachutes bobbing against the sky that makes your stomach flutter before you even leave the boat.

When it was finally our turn, we shuffled to the back deck (I almost tripped over my own flip-flop—smooth). The captain clipped us in and asked if we wanted to get dipped in the water or stay dry. We went for “just a toe,” but ended up with soaked legs anyway. The boat picked up speed along Destin’s shoreline and suddenly we were up—higher than I expected. You could see Crab Island off to one side and a streak of white sand curving around the bay. For a second it was quiet except for the wind slapping my ears; then my friend pointed down at what looked like two dolphins slicing through the shallows. I don’t know if they were showing off or just doing their thing.

The flight lasted maybe ten minutes, but time got weird up there. The world shrunk to just us, some gulls circling below, and that endless blue-green water. Our guide yelled something about spotting turtles near Choctawhatchee Bay (I couldn’t hear him clearly but he waved his arms like crazy). Coming down felt faster than going up—I kind of wish it lasted longer. Back on deck, everyone was grinning in that goofy way people do after they’ve done something slightly scary together.
