What’s the experience like?

“If you see a dolphin, just shout — they like the attention,” Captain Mike grinned as we stepped onto the Tiki Pub at Excursions Marina. I’d never boarded a boat shaped like a floating bar before, but there we were, clutching our BYOBs and scanning the blue-green water. There was this salty tang in the air, sunscreen mixing with something sweet from someone’s cooler. The first few minutes felt like that awkward bit at a party when no one knows each other yet — until someone (not me) broke out Uno cards and suddenly everyone was talking about where they were from.

The sun was already warm even though it wasn’t noon yet. We drifted along Fort Myers Beach, music low enough to hear gulls squabbling overhead. I tried to pronounce “Matanzas Pass” like our guide Li did — she laughed and said I almost had it, which probably meant I didn’t. There’s something about being on the water that makes you loosen up; maybe it’s the gentle rocking or maybe just knowing you’re not going anywhere for two hours except wherever the current takes you. Someone pointed — “Dolphin!” — and sure enough, two fins arched through the wake. I still think about that moment; how everyone went quiet for just a second.

I didn’t expect to actually play party games with strangers (I lost spectacularly at charades), but it turns out losing is funnier when you’re drifting past palm trees and pastel houses. The crew kept checking if we needed more ice or water from their cooler — small thing, but it made us feel looked after without being fussed over. By the end, people were swapping numbers or at least promising to send photos of that one perfect dolphin shot nobody actually caught on camera. The ride ended too soon for me, honestly.
