What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed walking into The Escape Game in Georgetown was how the air changed—it’s cooler inside, a little hum of excitement from other groups waiting. Our guide, Marcus, had this way of making everyone relax, even though we were all pretending not to be nervous about getting “locked in.” He grinned and said, “Don’t worry, there’s always an exit button,” which made my cousin laugh too loud. I picked the Titanic room because—well, who doesn’t want to try saving themselves from a sinking ship at least once?

Once that timer started (45 minutes for Titanic—felt shorter), my brain just switched on. We scrambled through clues, sometimes arguing over what counted as a clue (my sister still insists her idea was right). There was this faint smell of something lemony—maybe cleaning spray?—and I remember the texture of the old-timey props under my hands. Marcus popped in over the intercom with hints when we got stuck (“Try looking under the captain’s log”), but mostly let us flail around. At one point we teamed up with two college kids who’d booked the same slot; honestly, it made it more fun. More chaos too. We almost didn’t make it out in time—the last lock clicked open with maybe thirty seconds left. I think I actually cheered.

Afterwards we spilled out onto M Street blinking like moles. The whole block smelled like coffee and rain on pavement (classic DC spring). We ended up at Good Stuff Eatery for burgers and milkshakes, still arguing over who solved what. It’s funny—I thought escape rooms were just puzzles, but it was more about watching everyone’s personalities come out under pressure. I still think about that last frantic minute sometimes when I walk by Georgetown at night.
