What’s the experience like?

We’d just buckled in when the lights dropped and that first gust of cool air brushed my face — not cold, but like standing near the ocean before sunrise. Our guide, Keoni, grinned at us from the aisle and said something about “letting go and letting Hawai‘i carry you.” I was still fiddling with my seatbelt when the screen wrapped around us, huge and sharp as real life. Suddenly we were gliding above emerald cliffs near Kailua Kona, wind somehow swirling around my ankles. I could smell rain on warm earth. My niece squeezed my hand so tight I almost laughed.

The flying ride moved smooth — not jerky or stomach-flipping like I’d worried. More like drifting. We swept over waterfalls that looked close enough to touch, mist rising up (they actually spray a little water — didn’t expect that). Keoni told stories in between scenes; he talked about Pele and old fishing villages, his voice mixing with slack-key guitar music. At one point there was this scent — plumeria? — and it reminded me of my grandma’s backyard in Hilo. Weird how a smell can take you somewhere else for a second.

I tried to say “mahalo” properly at the end (Li laughed at my attempt), and we wandered out blinking into the bright Kona afternoon. The whole thing only took maybe half an hour but felt longer — not rushed at all. My dad kept talking about how even he could do it (he gets vertigo) and honestly, it was nice to share something where no one felt left out or nervous. I still think about that feeling of floating over those green valleys, even now back home.
