What’s the experience like?

I barely had my mask on before the boat slowed near Molokini Crater—one of those places you see in postcards but never quite believe until you’re floating above it. The water was clearer than I expected, almost glassy, and our guide Kimo pointed out the coral shapes below, naming fish I’d only seen in books. He laughed when I tried to say “humuhumunukunukuapua’a”—I definitely butchered it. There was this salty breeze and a faint smell of pineapple from the fruit platter someone was already eyeing.

After drifting around Molokini for a while (and yes, we did try both sides—depends on the current, apparently), we headed over to what Kimo called Turtle Town. I think it was La Perouse Bay that day, but he said they switch spots depending on conditions. The first turtle popped up right next to me—closer than I expected—and just hung there for a second before gliding down again. It felt weirdly peaceful, like time slowed down underwater. You could hear muffled laughter from the group every time someone spotted another shell moving through the reef.

The whole thing lasted about three hours but didn’t feel rushed at all. There was always juice or water if you needed it (I grabbed both after swallowing half the ocean). During whale season, they’ll stop if there are whales around—I didn’t see any this time but someone else swore they heard one in the distance. Anyway, by the end my hair was full of salt and I still think about that moment with the turtle just hanging out beside me. Not sure why that sticks so much.
