What’s the experience like?

I didn’t think much about the Everglades before — just a green blur on the map south of Miami. But the second we climbed onto that airboat, the world changed. Our guide, Marcus, handed out ear protection (it gets loud) and grinned like he’d seen this a thousand times but still enjoyed it. The boat skimmed over water so shallow I could see grass brushing the hull, and suddenly everything was just wind and sun and that weird, earthy smell you get in wetlands. Not unpleasant — just different, like rain on old leaves.

We slowed way down at one point because a heron was standing right in our path, totally unfazed by us. Marcus pointed out some distant shapes — alligators, apparently — though honestly my eyes took a minute to adjust to spotting them. He told us how some folks grow up knowing these waters better than city streets. I tried to imagine being a kid here; it’s so quiet once the engine cuts off, except for birds calling and insects buzzing somewhere out of sight.

There was bottled water in a cooler (needed that — Florida sun is no joke). I laughed when my friend tried to say “Anhinga” after Marcus did; she got it wrong every time and he just shook his head. I kept thinking how close Miami feels on a map but how far away it seems out here. The ride back felt too short — I wanted more time drifting with nothing but sky overhead. Still think about that silence sometimes.
