“You ever seen an alligator up close?” That’s how our guide, Carlos, kicked things off as we climbed into the airboat just outside Miami. I’d barely had time to process the smell of wet grass and that thick, earthy Florida air before he fired up the engine. The boat roared and we skimmed over water so flat it looked fake—sun glaring off it like a mirror. My friend tried to film but nearly dropped her phone when we hit our first turn (she’ll never admit it).

Carlos kept pointing out things I’d have missed—tiny purple flowers poking out of the reeds, a bird with legs so skinny I thought it was balancing on nothing. He slowed down at one spot and just nodded ahead; there was an alligator floating there, eyes above water, still as a log. I didn’t expect to feel nervous but yeah, my heart sped up a bit. The air smelled like mud and something sweet I couldn’t place—maybe those yellow blossoms he said were rare here.

The whole hour went by weirdly fast. There was this moment where everything got quiet except for the wind and some distant bird calls—I still think about that silence sometimes. On the way back, Carlos handed us cold bottled water and told us how his uncle used to fish in these wetlands before most people cared about them. We waved at another boat passing by—a kid on board gave us a thumbs-up for no reason at all.
