What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest — I booked this Mount St Helens day trip from Seattle mostly because I wanted to see what an “eruption zone” actually looked like. Didn’t expect to start the morning watching herons glide over marshes at Billy Frank Jr National Wildlife Refuge, but our guide Jamie pulled over and handed out binoculars before I’d even finished my coffee. It was quiet except for birdsong and someone’s shoes squishing in the grass. Felt like we were let in on some local secret.

The drive south was full of stories — Jamie’s got this way of making geology sound like gossip. When we reached the old growth forest, I remember running my hand along bark that felt older than anything I’ve ever touched (I mean, it probably is). There was this earthy smell, damp and sharp, that stuck to my jacket for hours. We wandered under trees so tall you have to tilt your head all the way back — I nearly tripped twice just looking up.

Getting closer to Mount St Helens itself, the landscape changed fast. Suddenly there’s these open scars where everything blasted away in 1980. The wind picked up on Eruption Trail and I could taste dust on my lips — not unpleasant, just real. Jamie pointed out elk tracks in the mud and told us about how life keeps coming back here, stubborn as ever. Lunch was outside near Coldwater Lake (the bread was local sourdough; I ate too much). We swapped stories while watching clouds move across the crater rim. Someone tried to spot elk through their sandwich — no luck but lots of laughter.

I still think about that view into the crater — it’s not pretty in a postcard way, more like standing inside a memory you didn’t know you had. On the way back we stopped at a little science center above Coldwater Lake where you can touch volcanic rocks and ask questions nobody else has ever thought of (I asked if trees ever “miss” their old neighbors; Jamie just grinned). Anyway, if you’re curious or just want fresh air with good company, this day trip is worth it.
