What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the neon—everywhere, buzzing and flickering off puddles on Lower Broadway. We met our group inside Coyote Ugly (I was a bit nervous, honestly), but our host, Jamie, had this way of making everyone laugh right away. She handed out wristbands and told us not to lose them—“unless you want to pay for your own drinks,” she joked. The place smelled like whiskey and something sweet I couldn’t place, maybe cinnamon from the shots lined up on the sticky bar.

Forty minutes at each stop sounds short, but it’s weird how time bends when you’re having fun—or maybe that was the tequila. At AJ’s Good Time Saloon, a guy in boots taught me how to two-step (badly). The band played “Wagon Wheel” and everybody sang along, arms around strangers. Jamie kept us moving before we could get too comfortable; she said if we stayed too long we’d never leave. She was probably right. Somewhere between Lucky Bastards Saloon and Alley Taps, we walked past the Ryman Auditorium—Jamie pointed it out like it was an old friend. I didn’t expect to feel anything about a building at midnight, but there’s something about seeing history in the middle of all that noise.

I tried to say “cheers” in three different accents by the third bar—Li laughed so hard she almost spilled her shot (sorry again for that). Printer’s Alley was our last stop; it felt quieter somehow, even though people were still shouting over the music. My shoes were sticking to the floor by then but nobody cared. You can stay after the crawl ends if you want—I did—and honestly, I’m glad I did because that’s when you really start talking to people you barely met three hours ago.
