What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed stepping onto the minibus in downtown Nashville was the mix of folks—some already joking about which whiskey would be their favorite, others just quietly excited. Our guide, Marcus, handed out bottled water and grinned like he knew secrets about Tennessee whiskey we didn’t yet. I sat by the window and tried to catch a last whiff of barbecue smoke drifting up from Broadway before we rolled out. The city faded quick, replaced by green hills and that kind of wide sky you only get outside town.

We hit our first distillery after about forty minutes—can’t say where (they keep it secret), but it felt like walking into someone’s family barn. The air smelled sweet and sharp, almost like baking bread mixed with oak. Marcus walked us through the mash room, explaining how Tennessee whiskey isn’t just bourbon with an accent—there’s this charcoal filtering step that makes it smoother. I tried to repeat “Lincoln County Process” and definitely mangled it; one of the distillers laughed and poured me an extra taste for effort. The samples came fast—three or four at each stop—and I kept thinking how different each one was: spicy, then mellow, then something almost floral.

Lunch happened somewhere between stops two and three (I lost track of time after tasting number seven). There was a lot of passing around sandwiches and swapping stories—one guy from Memphis claimed he could tell good whiskey just by sniffing it. Maybe he could? By the third distillery my notes were getting fuzzy but I remember standing outside in the sun, glass in hand, listening to cicadas while Marcus told us about old bootleggers hiding bottles in these same hills during Prohibition. You could almost picture it—the secrecy still lingers somehow.

I didn’t expect to feel so connected to this place or these people by the end. The ride back to Nashville was quieter; everyone a little sleepy but smiling. I still think about that last sip—a little smoky, warm going down—while we bounced along those country roads heading home.
