What’s the experience like?

“You’re gonna want to try the bread pudding,” was the first thing our driver said as we left New Orleans — and honestly, he wasn’t wrong. The van felt like a little bubble rolling out past Lake Pontchartrain, everyone half-awake and joking about the humidity. I didn’t expect the drive itself to feel so cinematic, but watching sugar cane fields blur by, it hit me how much history is just sitting quietly along these roads.

Destrehan Plantation was our first stop. Our guide, Ms. Lorraine (she had this gentle way of telling hard truths), led us through rooms heavy with stories. She pointed out grooves in the old wood floors and talked about the 1811 Slave Revolt — her voice dropped a bit when she described what happened here. I caught this whiff of magnolia outside, mixed with something older — maybe just old wood and river air? There was a moment in one of the upstairs rooms where everything went quiet except for someone’s shoes creaking behind me. It stuck with me.

The ride upriver to Houmas House was short but somehow felt like crossing into another world — more green, more sunlight bouncing off those big white columns. We walked straight into lunch (I went for gumbo and catfish; my friend loaded up on crawfish étouffée). The dining hall looked like something out of a movie but didn’t feel stuffy at all. Someone at another table tried to order a Mint Julep in their best Southern accent; our server just laughed and brought two. I still think about that bread pudding — warm, sweet, not too fancy, just right.

After eating way too much, we wandered the grounds under these giant oaks that look like they’ve seen everything. Our guide at Houmas House wore this bright antebellum dress (she joked about how hot it gets in summer) and showed us rooms filled with old paintings and stories about river life. There was a breeze off the Mississippi that made everything slow down for a minute. I stood by the belvédère looking out over cane fields stretching forever — it’s hard to explain but you feel both tiny and connected at once.
