What’s the experience like?

We slid our kayaks into the water just as the light started to shift—kind of that soft, golden haze you get in North Myrtle Beach when the air is thick but not heavy. Our guide, Jamie, showed us how to paddle without splashing too much (I still got a little wet anyway), and then we pushed off into the salt marsh maze. The reeds were taller than I expected, almost brushing my shoulders when we drifted close. You could hear birds somewhere out in the grass—sharp calls, then sudden quiet. I kept thinking we’d get lost in all those winding channels, but Jamie seemed to know every turn.

I didn’t expect the smell—sort of briny and grassy at the same time, not bad, just… honest. We stopped on this tiny sandbar where Jamie dug around and pulled up a hermit crab for us to hold. It tickled my palm, legs moving fast like it wanted to get back to its shell. There were little kids on another kayak who squealed every time they found a new shell; one held up a piece of driftwood like it was treasure. Honestly, I kind of felt the same way. The main keyword for me was just being out there—no cars or buildings in sight, just water and sky and these endless green paths.

At one point we floated quietly for a minute—nobody talking except for Jamie pointing out an egret standing so still it looked fake. The sun hit the water just right and everything went sort of silvery-blue for a second. I don’t know if everyone else noticed but I remember thinking I’d never seen that color before. We paddled back slowly because nobody really wanted it to end yet. My arms were tired but in that good way where you feel like you’ve actually done something real.
