What’s the experience like?

The first thing that happened was I dropped my sunglasses right as we were boarding — classic me. Our captain just grinned and said, “Don’t worry, you’ll want your eyes wide open for this anyway.” He was right. The air smelled salty and a little like sunscreen, and the boat’s engine had that steady hum that makes you feel like you’re heading somewhere good. There were a couple of families already chatting, kids bouncing around in their seats. I almost sat on someone’s beach bag.

We drifted past St. Andrew State Park, which our guide called “the dolphin’s favorite backyard.” He pointed out a spot where he’d seen a pod just yesterday — and then, like he’d summoned them, there they were: smooth gray backs slicing through the water. It wasn’t some big dramatic leap, just these quiet shapes moving together. Everyone got quiet for a second, except one little girl who whispered, “There they are!” I didn’t expect to feel so calm watching them — it’s different from seeing them in an aquarium, you know?

Shell Island looked almost unreal — no buildings at all, just white sand and these blue-green shallows. The captain slowed down so we could get closer to the dolphins (and maybe spot a sea turtle). Sunlight bounced off the water in that way that makes you squint even with your hand up. Someone offered me extra sunscreen after noticing my nose turning pink — Florida sun doesn’t mess around. There was a kind of hush as we floated there; even the kids stopped fidgeting for a minute.

By the time we turned back toward Panama City Beach, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once since we left the dock. That never happens to me. Maybe it was the sound of water against the hull or just being out there with strangers who felt oddly familiar by the end. I still think about those dolphins gliding along beside us — not showing off, just living their lives while we watched for a little while.
