What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how quiet everything felt once we pulled away from the dock. I’d expected more city noise, but it was just the soft hum of the boat and a few gulls overhead. Our captain—Tom, with a beard that could probably tell its own stories—pointed out the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry as we drifted past. He tossed out a fact about the submarine moored there (the USS Blueback) and then grinned when my partner tried to guess what year it retired. Wrong by a decade, apparently. The air smelled faintly metallic near the Steel Bridge, which Tom said is one of only a handful in the world with two decks that move independently. I still don’t totally get how that works, but watching a train roll underneath us while cars zipped above was weirdly mesmerizing.

Somewhere after Tilikum Crossing—a bridge you can’t drive across, only bikes and trams—clouds started to break up and sunlight hit the water in these shifting patches. We passed Elk Rock Island, which looked almost prehistoric with its jagged edges poking out of the river. Tom told us about Native American camps along these banks thousands of years ago; I tried to imagine what it sounded like back then without engines or bridges or even Portland itself. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for water slapping against the hull, and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so far away from things just minutes from downtown.

When we finally reached Willamette Falls—the main reason we booked this river cruise from Portland—I got why people talk about it so much. It’s not tall like Niagara or anything, but it’s wide and loud and kind of hypnotic if you stare long enough (which I did). Tom slowed down so we could take photos; he joked that he’d seen marriage proposals here but never an actual wedding yet. The spray carried this earthy smell—like wet stone and moss—and for a second I thought about how many travelers have come through here since Oregon City was just a muddy outpost at the end of the Oregon Trail.

I kept thinking about those old paper mills clinging to the banks near the falls—some abandoned now but still looming over everything. On our way back toward Portland, kids waved at us from Willamette Park while someone’s dog barked at geese on shore. It felt like we’d been gone longer than two hours somehow. Maybe because time moves differently when you’re watching history float by instead of reading about it.
