What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how the water in San Diego Bay looked almost glassy under the morning sun—just a little haze over downtown, boats bobbing quietly. We met Captain Dave at the dock (he’s got that relaxed laugh you only get from years on the water), and he helped us clamber onto this Catalina 34’ sailboat. Shoes off, toes on deck, I could already smell salt and sunscreen mixing in the air. There were just five of us—plus Dave—so it felt more like joining someone’s friends than some big group tour.

We set out past the skyline, sails snapping up with that satisfying thud. Dave pointed out Coronado Bridge and told us about the Navy ships docked nearby—his stories sounded half like local gossip, half like history class, but in a good way. Someone spotted a seal poking its head up (I swear it winked at us), and suddenly everyone was leaning over one side trying to catch another glimpse. The snacks came out—simple stuff, but somehow crackers taste better when you’re out on the bay with salty wind in your hair. If you want to bring wine or beer, you totally can; next time I will.

I didn’t expect how quiet it would get once we cut the engine and let the wind do all the work. Just creaking ropes and soft voices, with downtown glinting behind us. It’s not really about “seeing everything”—it’s more about feeling how San Diego moves at its own pace from out there. At one point I just sat back and watched sunlight flicker on the water for what felt like ages. Still think about that view sometimes.
