What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I thought we’d breeze through the escape game at Southcenter—my cousin’s a puzzle nerd and I’m pretty decent at spotting clues (or so I thought). But right as the door clicked shut behind us, the lights shifted and our guide grinned like he knew something we didn’t. There was this faint smell of fresh paint mixed with popcorn from the mall outside. You could hear kids laughing somewhere down the hall, which felt weirdly comforting when you’re about to “save the world” or whatever mission you pick.

We went for “The Heist”—I mean, who doesn’t want to play art thief for an hour? Our game guide, Marcus, gave us just enough hints to keep things moving but never spoiled anything. At one point, my sister tried to decode a lock using her birthday (nice try), and Marcus just raised an eyebrow through the intercom. The puzzles actually made us talk to each other more than usual—like real teamwork, not just shouting random numbers. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to feel so intense when that timer hit ten minutes left. My hands were sweaty; it’s ridiculous how fast sixty minutes disappears in there.

Afterwards, we wandered out into Westfield Southcenter—still half-arguing about who solved what—and ended up at Din Tai Fung for dumplings. I kept replaying that last clue in my head while dipping xiao long bao in vinegar. The whole thing was way more fun than scrolling my phone for an hour (and yeah, you can totally bring your little cousins or grandma—there were families in every room). Wheelchair access is there too; saw someone roll right in without a hitch. Not sure if it was the adrenaline or just being together outside our usual routine, but I still think about that rush when we cracked the final code.
