What’s the experience like?

We shuffled onto the boat at Seward’s dock, still rubbing sleep from our eyes, and I remember thinking the air already smelled like salt and pine needles — sharper than I expected. Our guide, Jamie, handed out binoculars and grinned at my too-thin jacket (“You’ll want layers, trust me”). The captain didn’t stick to a script; she said we’d chase whatever the day gave us. I liked that — it felt like we were in on something unpredictable.

Somewhere past Resurrection Bay, the water turned that weird blue-green you only see in Alaska. We drifted close to Holgate Glacier and everyone went quiet except for a kid who kept asking if it was going to fall apart (honestly, I wondered too). Then came this deep groaning sound — not sure how else to describe it — and a chunk of ice crashed into the sea. Spray hit my cheeks. Jamie pointed out harbor seals lounging on floating ice like they owned the place. Lunch was simple but warm (soup and sandwiches), which tasted better than usual after standing outside in that cold wind.

I lost track of time watching puffins dive and pop up again near the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. There was this moment when someone spotted orcas off to starboard — people rushed over, nearly tripping on each other, but nobody seemed to mind. The captain slowed down so we could just stand there in silence for a bit. I caught myself grinning for no real reason. Later, Jamie told us stories about local fishermen dodging storms in these same waters. It made everything feel smaller somehow — in a good way.
