What’s the experience like?

We were already bouncing along the dusty trail in our Can-Am UTV when I realized my sunglasses were useless against all that orange glare. Our guide, Mike, had this way of talking about the land like it was a stubborn old friend—he pointed out a patch of wildflowers clinging to the rocks, said they only bloom after rare spring rains. I could smell sage and something dry and metallic in the air. We stopped at Peekaboo Slot Canyon, and honestly, I wasn’t prepared for how narrow those walls got—my backpack scraped sandstone more than once. There was this hush inside, just our footsteps echoing. Mike told us stories about flash floods shaping the canyon; you could see lines on the walls where water had rushed through years ago.

The drive to The Great Chamber felt longer than ten miles because I kept craning my neck at every ridge and thinking we’d arrived—nope, just another bluff or curve. Somewhere along the way we passed Best Friends Animal Sanctuary; I glimpsed a few dogs running around and kind of wished we could stop (Mike laughed and said he gets that request a lot). The hike up to The Great Chamber is short but honestly pretty steep—I was breathing hard by halfway up, sand filling my shoes. But then you step into this giant alcove carved right into the mountain, all cool shade and soft light pouring through the opening. It’s weirdly quiet up there except for wind pushing sand around. My shoes are probably still full of it.

I still think about that view from inside The Great Chamber—the way sunlight hit those ripples in the sand, almost like waves frozen mid-motion. We sat there for a while not really talking, just passing around water bottles (included with the tour), letting our legs recover before heading back down. It’s not a long walk overall—maybe a mile and a half total—but it sticks with you more than some hikes twice as far. So yeah, if you’re looking for something different out near Kanab or just want an excuse to get red dust on your boots, this day trip to Peekaboo Slot Canyon & The Great Chamber is worth it.
