What’s the experience like?

We pulled away from the dock just as a couple of pelicans squabbled over some unlucky fish scraps — I remember the captain grinning at us like he’d seen it a thousand times. The boat picked up speed, and you could smell that sharp Atlantic salt in the air, mixing with sunscreen and something sweet from someone’s bag. Our guide — I think her name was Carla — started pointing out little things along the shore: old coquina walls, fishermen waving, even a dog wearing sunglasses (not kidding). She had this way of telling stories about St Augustine that made me forget I was on a dolphin & wildlife tour and not just tagging along with an old friend.

I’d heard about Castillo de San Marcos before but seeing it from the water hit different. The fort looked heavier somehow, like it belonged more to the bay than to land. Carla told us how it survived sieges and hurricanes — she even showed us where cannonballs left marks. We drifted by the Bridge of Lions too, its white statues looking kind of sleepy in the sun. The wind kept changing; one minute warm, next minute cool enough to make you zip up your jacket. Somewhere near the inlet, dolphins popped up right by our boat. Not in any dramatic way — just a few quick arcs and then gone again. Still, everyone went quiet for a second. I still think about that silence.

After passing under the shadow of The Great Cross (it really is huge), we circled back toward The Bayfront. Kids were leaning over the rails counting jellyfish; someone’s grandpa tried to guess how deep the water was (he was off by a lot). There was bottled water if you needed it but honestly I forgot to grab one until we were almost back at shore. So yeah, if you’re thinking about a day trip around St Augustine with some history and maybe dolphins if they feel like showing up — this is pretty much it.
