What’s the experience like?

We were already rolling past murals when I realized how much color Tampa throws at you. Our guide, Marcus, pointed out “Laura with the Bun” outside the Tampa Museum of Art — he said it’s kind of a local mascot. The minibus was cool (thankfully, because Florida), and everyone kept craning for better views through the windows. I caught a whiff of coffee drifting from somewhere as we slowed near a park; kids were shrieking at the splash pad, and honestly, I wanted to join them for a second.

There was this moment in The Scrub neighborhood — Marcus lowered his voice and told us about its African American roots. I hadn’t heard any of that before. He waved at an older guy sitting on his porch who nodded back like they’d done this a hundred times. We passed shipping containers stacked into shops and food stalls; someone behind me asked if we could stop for Cuban sandwiches but we were headed to Ybor City next anyway. That place felt different — the air smelled faintly sweet, almost smoky from the old cigar factories. Li laughed when I tried to say “guayabera” right (I didn’t), and then we all just wandered a bit under those wrought-iron balconies.

I still think about that quick photo stop by Bayshore — sunlight bouncing off the water, palm trees flickering past. It wasn’t perfect; my phone camera caught my thumb instead of the pirate ship Marcus pointed out. But somehow that fits. By the time we circled back toward Armature Works, people were already swapping restaurant tips or plotting which mural to find later. The whole city felt bigger than I expected, more layered.
