What’s the experience like?

We were already drifting when I realized how quiet the Rio Grande can be — not silence exactly, but that soft hush of water brushing against the raft. Our guide, Mike, pointed out the way the light hit those black basalt cliffs in the Orilla Verde area. He grew up nearby and you could tell; he knew every bend and which birds would flash by if you looked quick enough. The air smelled faintly like sagebrush and river mud, which sounds odd but it’s actually kind of comforting after a while.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much — especially when we hit our first Class II rapid. Nothing wild, but enough to get splashed and hear someone in the back (maybe me) yelp a little too loud. Between rapids it was just slow floating, watching high desert colors blur together. At one point, Mike let us hop in for a swim; water colder than I thought but worth it. There’s something about swimming in that canyon light that sticks with you.

Passing through Pilar felt almost like sneaking by — Mike asked us to keep voices low out of respect for the village. A couple locals waved from their porch, which made me smile even though my teeth were chattering from the swim. The whole thing felt unrushed and oddly grounding. I still think about that stretch where everything slowed down and all you could hear was paddles tapping water.
