What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it felt inside the stretch limo—just this soft hum as we pulled away from our hotel in Washington DC. Our driver, Samir, waved off my awkward attempt to open the door myself (“That’s my job!”), then handed us cold water bottles like it was nothing. We glided past the U.S. Capitol just as the sun started to dip behind its dome—honestly, I didn’t expect that view to hit me so much. The city outside looked busy but in here it felt like our own little world.

We stopped at the White House and everyone tried to get that perfect shot (my cousin’s finger made a guest appearance in most of mine). Samir pointed out tiny details I’d never have noticed—like how the National Museum of African Art almost disappears into the landscape if you’re not looking for it. He told us about his favorite spot on the National Mall for cherry blossoms, even though we were way out of season. At the Lincoln Memorial, there was this weird hush—people mostly whispering or just standing there looking up at Abe. It’s strange how a monument can feel heavy and gentle at once.

Driving along Pennsylvania Avenue felt surreal; Samir joked that we were following “the President’s parade route,” which made my uncle sit up straighter for some reason. The night part of the tour was even better than I expected—the monuments lit up are something else entirely. At the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, someone had left fresh flowers by his feet and you could smell them faintly in the air, mixing with city stone and river breeze. We ended near Georgetown with tired legs but still wide awake somehow—I still think about that last glimpse of lights on the Potomac as we crossed back over.
