What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to actually feel nervous stepping onto that big, shiny bus outside the U.S. Navy Memorial. Maybe it was the way our guide, Marcus, grinned and waved us in—like he already knew half our names. The seats were soft (and honestly, I’m picky about seats), and the air smelled faintly of coffee from someone’s thermos. We rolled past the Capitol first thing, sunlight bouncing off all that marble. I remember thinking: this is where everything happens—well, at least on TV.

Marcus had this way of pointing out things you’d never spot alone. At the World War II Memorial, he told us about the little hidden “Kilroy Was Here” etching—he made us hunt for it ourselves. Someone found it before me (I pretended not to mind). The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial felt quieter than I expected; people spoke softly there, even kids. By then my feet were starting to ache but it didn’t matter because we’d pile back onto the climate-controlled bus just as I started to wilt.

Lunch was its own adventure—summer meant Georgetown by the water, so we wandered off for sandwiches and watched rowers glide under bridges. In winter, Pentagon City instead (Marcus joked about getting lost in the mall). The boat cruise surprised me; wind in my hair and that view of DC’s skyline—I still think about that moment when everything looked smaller from out on the Potomac. Back on land, we stopped at Lincoln Memorial and stood under his gaze; honestly, I got goosebumps for reasons I can’t explain.

The last stretch took us through more memorials—the Vietnam Veterans Memorial’s black stone felt cold under my hand—and FDR’s words carved into granite made me pause longer than I thought I would. It wasn’t all heavy though; Marcus cracked jokes about presidential pets and pointed out squirrels who seemed to own the place. By the end I was tired but weirdly energized too—hard to explain unless you’ve done a full Washington DC day tour like this.
