What’s the experience like?

Pushing aside a low branch, I watched our guide—Minh, who joked he’d been coming here since before he could even reach the entrance—kneel down and brush some red dust off the lid of a tunnel. He grinned and waved us over. I hesitated, honestly, because the opening looked smaller than my backpack. But Minh just said, “You’ll fit. Vietnamese size!” and everyone laughed, including the older couple from Canada who’d already started filming everything on their phones.

The Cu Chi Tunnels themselves are cooler than I expected—both literally and in that weird way where you can smell earth and something metallic, maybe old tools or just history itself. It’s about 50 km from Ho Chi Minh City but feels like another world once you’re under all that jungle cover. Minh pointed out scratch marks on the wall where people dug by hand during the war. He told us stories about families living underground for weeks at a time, which made me stop complaining about my own apartment’s lack of windows back home.

At one point we squeezed through a narrow passage—my knees still remember it—and then popped up somewhere totally different, sunlight hitting us hard after all that dimness. There was this moment where nobody said anything; we just stood there blinking and listening to birds overhead. I didn’t expect to feel so much just walking through tunnels, but here we are. On the ride back (air conditioning felt like heaven), someone handed out wet tissues and we traded stories about what surprised us most—I think I’ll always remember that silence after coming up into the light.
