What’s the experience like?

First thing I remember is the cool, earthy smell when we ducked into the Cu Chi Tunnels — honestly, I’d seen photos but didn’t expect that sense of being swallowed by history. Our guide, Minh, kept grinning at us as we shuffled along; he told stories about his uncle who actually lived down here during the war. At one point I brushed my hand against the tunnel wall and felt how damp it was — like old clay after rain. It made everything feel closer somehow. There were bats somewhere overhead (or maybe just my imagination), and outside you could hear birds arguing in the trees.

After that, it was a bit of a drive out to Ben Luc for lunch by the river — which was way better than I’d expected (I still think about that fish with lemongrass). The Mekong Delta felt like another planet compared to Ho Chi Minh City: slower, green everywhere, air thick with sweet grass and something floral I couldn’t name. We piled into a tuk tuk and rattled past kids waving from doorways and old women shelling something under their porch roofs. Minh stopped to pick guava straight off a tree for us — he laughed when I tried to say “ổi” in Vietnamese (I definitely butchered it).

I liked how nothing felt rushed. The canal boat ride was quiet except for our paddler humming softly — at one point we passed a farmer scooping water with this big wooden ladle thing, and Minh explained how families use those for irrigation. We sipped fresh coconut juice in hammocks under palm leaves before heading back, legs covered in dust but kind of happy-tired. I kept thinking about those tunnels all evening — can’t really shake that feeling.
