What’s the experience like?

We stepped right onto Brighton Beach and I could smell the salt and something sweet—molasses maybe—from the West Indies Rum Distillery behind us. The place has this old brick wall covered in faded stories about George Stade, who started it all in 1893. Our guide, Marcia, handed us a cold welcome cocktail (she called it “the Planter’s Smile”—I tried to say it back but she just grinned) and pointed out the copper stills through a window. I didn’t expect to start laughing so soon, but there’s something about sipping rum with your toes in warm sand that makes you loosen up fast.

The tasting itself was on this wooden deck facing the sea—honestly, you could hear the waves more than the traffic. Marcia lined up four little glasses of different rums from their own range. She explained each one like she was telling secrets: how one had hints of banana leaf, another almost smoky. I can’t say I tasted everything she described (maybe my palate needs work), but the last one hit me with this caramel note that stuck around even after we moved on to rum cocktails. The sun kept shifting on the water while we talked about how rum is basically woven into Barbados’ history—she told us stories about old sugar cane fields and her uncle’s favorite bottle.

Afterwards, we just wandered down to the soft part of Brighton Beach—chairs and umbrellas were waiting for us. There was music drifting from the bar and people laughing over plates of fried fish; I ordered some spicy bites that went surprisingly well with my second drink. The whole place felt relaxed but not staged—locals mixed with visitors, kids running past our chairs chasing each other into the surf. At some point I realized I’d lost track of time completely. It’s funny how a day trip for rum tasting in Barbados turns into something you keep replaying in your head later.
