What’s the experience like?

We stepped onto the Whistler Sliding Centre track still laughing about my failed attempt to pronounce “bobsleigh” in French (our guide, Jamie, just grinned and let me off easy). The air had that sharp mountain smell—pine mixed with something metallic from the rails. I could hear distant cheers echoing down from another group ahead of us. It’s wild to think this is where Olympians flew down at terrifying speeds, but here we were, helmets in hand, about to do our own summer bobsleigh run on wheels.

The orientation was quick but kind of fascinating—Jamie pointed out the start gates and told us how the track changes personality in winter. We did a slow walk along part of the course, tracing the curves with our fingers. At one turn, I swear you could feel the ghosts of adrenaline still hanging in the air. My daughter kept asking if we’d go upside down (nope), and someone behind us joked about needing a seatbelt for their nerves.

Then it was time—climbing into the bobsleigh felt awkward at first, knees bumping, laughter all around. Our pilot (I think his name was Mark?) cracked a joke about “keep your arms inside unless you want to high-five a wall.” And then we were off—wind in my face, wheels rattling hard through each twist. It’s loud and fast and sort of chaotic for those 40 seconds, but honestly? I didn’t expect to feel so giddy after. My hands shook a bit getting out; my daughter’s hair stuck up like she’d been electrocuted. We got a photo right after—my grin looks ridiculous.

It rained halfway through our session but no one seemed to care—the ride goes rain or shine. There’s something about sharing that nervous energy with strangers that sticks with you longer than you’d think.
