What’s the experience like?

"You hear that?" our guide Marco asked, stopping mid-step as the ground crunched under our boots. It was this low, distant rumble—like thunder but deeper, coming from somewhere inside Mount Etna itself. I remember glancing at my friend and grinning, half nervous. We’d left Catania behind in a 4x4 less than an hour earlier, windows fogged up from our breath and the morning chill. The road twisted higher until the trees thinned out and the air started smelling faintly of ash and pine needles. Marco kept pointing out old lava flows—some so black they looked almost fake against the yellow grass.

The walk wasn’t hard, but there were moments I just had to stop and stare at Valle del Bove spreading out below us. There’s something about that place—huge, silent except for wind scraping over rock. At one point, Marco handed us helmets and flashlights (mine was way too big) before ducking into a lava cave. Inside it was cold and damp; my fingers brushed gritty walls while someone ahead laughed about bats (there weren’t any). I didn’t expect to feel so small in there. When we came back out, sunlight felt strange on my face.

After all that dust and climbing, pulling up to a family-run farm felt like landing on another planet. The owner poured us little glasses of red wine—Etna DOC, he said—and set out plates of cheese with this honey that tasted smoky-sweet. I tried asking about the bees in my terrible Italian; his wife just smiled and pressed more bread into my hand. I still think about that honey sometimes when I’m back home making breakfast—funny how a taste can stick with you longer than a photo.
