What’s the experience like?

By the time we reached Mirador Puerto Marquez, I was already sweating through my shirt—Acapulco’s sun doesn’t mess around. Our guide, Esteban, grinned and handed me a cold bottle of water before pointing out Acapulco Diamante shimmering below. There were families snapping photos and a couple of old guys arguing about football in rapid Spanish. I tried to catch a breeze but mostly just caught the smell of fried fish drifting up from somewhere down the hill.

We ducked into a chapel next, where it felt oddly cool and quiet compared to outside. Esteban told us about the family who donated it (I forget their name now, but he said it twice). I snapped what might be my best postcard shot of Acapulco Bay—though my thumb is in one corner. After that we wandered through a silver factory; the clinking of metal on metal was almost soothing. I tried on a bracelet that I still regret not buying. The art and craft market was chaos in the best way: bright colors everywhere, kids running between stalls, and someone selling tamarind candies that stuck to my teeth for hours.

The Zócalo was buzzing—locals fanning themselves under trees, vendors calling out in sing-song voices. Esteban pointed out an old hotel where apparently John Wayne used to stay (didn’t expect that), then led us to the Diego Rivera mural. It’s huge up close—almost overwhelming with all those swirling blues and golds. A little girl tugged her mom’s sleeve and whispered something about mermaids; honestly, I saw them too.

I’d heard about Acapulco’s cliff divers but seeing them in person is something else—the crowd goes quiet for a second before they leap, then everyone erupts in applause or nervous laughter. My heart thudded so loud I almost missed Esteban offering me a beer (included, thankfully). We ended up lingering longer than planned just watching the waves crash below. Even now when I hear seagulls back home, I remember that moment by the cliffs—sunburned shoulders and all.
