What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the road from Marrakech to Essaouira to smell like wild thyme, but it did—especially when we rolled down the window somewhere past Chichaoua. Our driver, Youssef, met us right outside our riad holding a little sign with my name (spelled almost right). He smiled and helped with bags, then asked if we wanted music or silence. I said “surprise us,” and he grinned—turns out he’s into old Rai songs. The car was cool inside, which felt like magic after that sticky morning heat.

The drive took about three hours, but it didn’t drag at all. There were these long stretches of argan trees—some goats actually up in the branches, which I thought was just a postcard thing until I saw it myself. At one point Youssef suggested stopping at a women’s argan oil cooperative. We watched them grind nuts by hand (the smell is kind of nutty and earthy), and I tried the oil on bread—honestly, better than I expected. We didn’t linger too long; he seemed to sense when we were ready to get back on the road.

He dropped us right at our Airbnb in Essaouira’s medina—no fuss about winding streets or anything. For me that drive is part of what made Essaouira feel so easy to reach—and somehow more real.
