What’s the experience like?

We were already halfway to Zaanse Schans when our guide, Pieter, started telling us stories about growing up near the windmills. I could see the green wooden houses peeking out through the window — brighter than I’d pictured. The air smelled like wet grass and wood smoke. At the clog workshop, I tried carving my initials (badly) into a scrap of wood; Pieter laughed and said even locals struggle with it. The cheese farm was next — Gouda tastes different when you eat it right there, still creamy and warm somehow. I probably ate too much, but no regrets.

The windmill tour surprised me. Inside, it’s all gears and dust and this low humming sound that you feel in your chest. We climbed up to the platform — windy as anything — and I just stood there for a minute watching the sails turn over the water. There was a couple taking selfies nearby; their hair kept blowing in their faces and they couldn’t stop laughing. It felt honest, you know? Lunch was at this small place by the river — nothing fancy, but the bread was fresh and they served this mustard soup that I’m still thinking about.

Keukenhof Gardens hit differently after that. It’s huge — way bigger than I expected — with rows of tulips in every color you can imagine (and some you can’t). There were families everywhere, kids running between flower beds, people crouching down to get photos at weird angles. At one point I just sat on a bench and let myself zone out for a bit; all those colors start to blur together if you stare long enough. On the drive back to Amsterdam, Pieter played Dutch radio quietly and nobody really talked much — everyone just looking out at fields or dozing off. That silence felt good.
