What’s the experience like?

We climbed aboard the Stella Oceana just after dark — Tromsø’s harbor lights behind us, the air sharp enough to sting my nose. Our captain, Erik (he grew up here), handed out mugs of hot chocolate before we even left the dock. I’d layered up like they said but still shuffled inside to the saloon first, where someone had already claimed a pile of blankets near the window. There was this quiet hum from the engine and a salty smell mixed with something woodsy from all the wool and wet coats drying by the heater.

We drifted north, away from town. Erik pointed out where he thought the northern lights might show up — “sometimes they surprise you,” he shrugged. The crew kept checking the sky, but no one made any promises about seeing them. I liked that honesty. At some point I tried to say “aurora borealis” in Norwegian; Li (one of the crew) laughed so hard she nearly spilled her tea. I still can’t say it right.

The hot tub on deck was steaming under the open sky, which felt almost ridiculous at first — stripping down to swimwear while everyone else was zipped up in parkas. But after five minutes in there, I barely noticed the cold anymore. The water smelled faintly mineral, and every time someone got out their hair steamed in the night air. Someone passed around bowls of reindeer soup — earthy, a little sweet from root vegetables — and bread that tasted like it came straight from someone’s kitchen.

I kept looking up for those green ribbons but honestly, even without them it felt… peaceful? Maybe that’s not what people expect from a northern lights yacht cruise in Tromsø, but it’s true. The sea was quiet except for our wake and once or twice we heard laughter echo off the water when someone braved a dash across deck barefoot (not recommended). On the way back I sat by the window again with cookies and coffee, watching ice form at the edge of my cup.
