What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to actually smell the fermenting grapes before I saw them. When we stepped into Quinta da Foz in Pinhão, it was that soft, earthy sweetness—almost like warm bread but sharper. Our guide, Ana, waved us over with a grin and started showing us around the old winery. She talked about how her family’s been making wine here since 1872, which made me realize how much history is packed into these stone walls. I kept touching the cool surfaces as she explained their vinification process (I probably looked distracted but honestly just wanted to feel everything).

Down in the cellar it was darker and quieter—except for the faint echo of someone laughing upstairs. Barrels everywhere. Ana told us they still age both red and white wines here, plus Port (which I always thought was just for dessert but apparently not). The air was chilly and smelled faintly of wood and something sweet I couldn’t place. She let us peek at some of the older barrels—they look almost alive with age marks. At one point she mentioned they still do some of the winemaking barefoot; Li laughed when I tried to say “vinificação” in Portuguese—definitely butchered it.

The tasting itself was more relaxed than I expected. Five different wines lined up next to a tiny bowl of olive oil—so green it almost glowed. The first sip surprised me: dry but somehow bright? We dipped crackers in olive oil between pours and Ana told stories about harvest seasons and stubborn weather (apparently last year’s rain nearly ruined everything). Afterward we wandered into the vineyard on our own—the vines twist around old stone terraces, and there’s this view down toward the river that I still think about sometimes. It felt good to just stand there for a minute without anyone talking.
