What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is how the light changed as we left Las Palmas—city noise fading, then that sudden hush when our guide, Marta, pulled the van over by a ridge. The air felt sharper up here; you could smell pine and something earthy, almost like old stone after rain. She pointed out Roque Nublo in the distance—honestly, it looked smaller than I’d pictured from photos, but somehow more mysterious. We all just stood there for a minute, nobody talking. I guess sometimes you need silence to let a place sink in.

Marta had this way of weaving stories about Gran Canaria’s peaks—about Pico de las Nieves and why locals call it “the roof of the island.” She laughed when I tried to pronounce “Teror” correctly (I definitely didn’t), but she said it was close enough. In San Mateo we stopped for coffee; the café was crowded with old men arguing gently over dominoes and the smell of pastries drifting out onto the street. The pace felt slower here—like nobody was in a rush except maybe us.

Bandama Caldera surprised me—the crater is huge up close, and you can see wildflowers clinging to the sides if you look down carefully (which made my stomach flip a bit). There’s this strange quiet at the rim except for birds calling somewhere below. At one point Marta handed around some local cheese she’d picked up earlier—I still think about that salty bite mixed with mountain air. The road back wound through forests that looked almost enchanted in late afternoon light. I kept trying to take photos but none really caught what it felt like to be there, which is probably how it should be.
